C-Max - Polymer additive

C-MAX is a Cement Admixture manufactured under license from Dr. Volker in der Weische, Germany conforming to IS 2645:2003 for Integral Waterproofing Admixture and IS 9103:1999 for Water reducing admixture.

C-MAX is a solution of micro fines mineral particles as well as some Nano ceramics in Phenolic Acrylates. This is a proprietary product of SRL, developed in co-operation with Dr. Volker In der Wiesche, Germany. These Nano ceramics and micro fine materials give additional strength to the concrete Block.

Excess quantity of water used during construction period leads to defect in the concrete. If more water is added, it will evaporate and will lead to voids in the concrete, thereby making the concrete weaker.

By adding C-MAX, water demand in the cement is reduced and the cement colloids travel to fill up all the voids and produce a compact and dense concrete mass.

Cement is basically a chemical, having various proportions of Di-Calcium Silicate (DCS) and Tri-Calcium Silicate (TCS). Grade-33 type of cement contains 33% TCS and Grade-43 type of cement contains about 43% TCS. Higher TCS containing material needs colder climates and Grade 53 type of cement is used more in construction of dams etc, because, they are basically high heat generation cement and they work better and give more strength in under water condition or in high humid conditions. In Indian condition, where temperature variation is extreme, it is always better to use moderate heat generating type of cement, like Grade-33 type. Grade-33 type does not mean that, strength in the structure will be less. But, it will ease the use and will not generate more heat during use. So, less water is required and so, you also save on the cost of the material, which cement manufacturers charge for Grade-53 type. It is very interesting to know that, the chemical composition of the cement irrespective of their grades, world-over remains the same. The general chemistry is as under:
  • » CaO : 64% ± 4%
  • » SiO2 : 22% ± 1%
  • » Al2O3 : 6% ± 1%
  • » Fe2O3 : 5% ± 2%

Need for Water Proofing your construction
  • » Water Seepage causes damage to the expensive interiors of your residential/office complex.
  • » Various Health/respiratory problems arise due to the dampness in the ceiling and walls of the building.
  • » Water Seepage results in structural weakening of your construction by increasing the corrosion of the
       TMT bars in your building.
  • » The cost and mental agony of undertaking a water proofing work in your existing construction in addition
to the irreversible damage to the interiors of the building.
Is there any other Low Cost solution available in the market?

Among the solutions available in the market there is a trade off between Cost and Quality.
In short the product should be Value for money i.e offer the highest value at the least possible cost and just being the cheapest will not work. A case in point in the Indian market is the comparison between the sales of Maruti Swift and Tata Nano. The cost of Nano is one-third that of Swift but the sales of swift is 3 times more than that of Nano. WHY? Because it offers higher value for money to the Indian customers.

water proofing with cmax yeieds highest value for money

C-MAX will help in faster construction, as the de-shuttering can be done between 4-8 days, instead of minimum 21 days in normal condition and for the spans below 10 ft. to 11 ft, de-shuttering can be done within 4-5 days.

In all the cement, strengths are contributed by TCS and DCS. TCS will give initial setting strength and DCS gives the final setting strength. Before the cement takes in the form of structure or concrete, it goes through the following process:
  • » Hydrolysis
  • » Hydration
  • » Hardening
The complete chemical reaction is as under.
  1. Hydrolysis of Tri-Calcium Silicate (3 CaO. SiO2)
    Hydrolysis 3CaO. SiO2 + H2O 2 CaO. SiO2 + Ca(OH)2 (When water is less) Hydrolysis

    2(3Cao. SiO2) + 3H2O 3CaO. 2SiO2 + 3Ca(OH)2 (When water is more)
  2. Hydrolysis of Di Calcium Silicate, (2CaO.SiO2)
    Hydrolysis 2CaO. SiO2 + H2O CaO. SiO2 + Ca(OH)2

  3. Hydrated Molecules of Calcium Silicates
    1. 3CaO.SiO2.6H2O (Hexahydrate)
    2. 2CaO.SiO2.4H2O (Quadrahydrate)
    3. CaO.SiO2.2H2O (Dehydrate)
Process of Hydration: DCS & TCS convert in to Hydrated Silicate molecules in contact with water. The process of gel formation takes place, which produces crystalined structure and thus, setting of cement starts. All polymers get final strength after complete chain reaction of any polymer structure and the same thing happens in cement, which hardens due to formation of crystalined structure, due to chain reaction.

FAQ ON C-MAX

What is C-Max and why it is called so?

C-Max is a newly developed polymeric additive for cement and it is called C-Max, because, it maximizes the cement surface area and it makes use of each and every particle of cement for the purpose of its use. Cement is not only a binder, but also one of the best water proofing agents. Due to this binding capability, after manufacturing and during storage, the finer grains mingle with each other and give the cement a dense structure. Once the polymer, i.e. C-Max is added, each and every grain is loosened and the same cement occupies more area and this can be shown very easily in an experiment, taking two glasses of water, wherein, same quantity of cement is added. In one glass, add C-Max as recommended, stir it and see the results for yourself.

Does C-Max reduce cement & water ratio?

Yes, C-Max helps in reducing the cement & water ratio and decreases the quantity of water used.

If the cement surface area is expanding, will it swell the concrete mass or the plaster?

No, the addition of C-Max releases the fine grains of cement, which are coagulated and this action does not create any force. So, the question of surface area expansion or swelling does not arise. Through the sliding action of particles, increased surface area is absorbed in a mass.

Where does the expanded or maximized cement go in the mass?

If you see the structure of concrete or a cement & sand block or if you test the porosity of cement as per IS approved method, then you will find that, porosity level are as high as 35% in a concrete mass. This porosity only absorbs and retains moisture to give rise to problem of water seepage in due course of time. If you add C-Max, then the cement surface area increases & penetrates in to all these pores and reduces the porosity. If test of water absorption is done on these Blocks of cement made, water absorption is reduced up to 52% or say permeability of Block is reduced. It can be tested as per IS-2645 & we have test results from National Test House, vide Test Certificate No.CE/05/216, dated 10/11/2005.

What is the most ideal addition rate of C-Max and what happens, if more and less quantity is added?

Most ideal rate of C-MAX addition is 1.0% of cement. If more quantity is added, then it looses its effect and you may not get the desired results, because the polymer will once again act as adhesive and will have a negative effect by reducing area, instead of increasing. Less than 1% addition rate, is also not good for the purpose of water proofing, because, the porosity level will be higher as expansion of surface area is up to 30-40% instead of 80-100% at 1% addition rate. However, we have found that, if C-MAX is used to agglomerate mineral fines and then if a mechanical pressure is used for giving shapes to agglomerates, then ideal addition rate of C-MAX is 5% of cement. Tata Steel at their Sukinda Mines does extensive use of this material. Cement use in agglomerates was brought down to only 5% in place of 10% as per normal standards.

Does the addition of C-Max affect the strength in any manner?

Strength of cement is directly proportional to the sand and metals used in the concrete. However, by adding C-Max, comparative strength may increase by about 10-15%, depending on the right granulometry of aggregates.

Can you touch C-Max with hand without any precautions?

Yes, C-Max is water soluble and water dispersible and it can be touched with naked hand. It is also having very low Chloride & Sulfate content.

Does C-Max help in faster setting of cement?

Yes, it will help in faster setting of cement. Curing will be faster, as compared to normal cement used without addition of C-Max.

What is the Chemical Composition of C-MAX and how it helps in increasing the strength?

C-MAX is a solution of micro fines mineral particles as well as some Nano ceramics in Phenolic Acrylates. This is a proprietary product of SRL, developed in co-operation with Dr. Volker In der Wiesche, Germany. These Nano ceramics and micro fine materials give additional strength to the concrete Block.

Whether extra addition of C-Max is harmful?

Yes, extra addition of C-MAX should be avoided as far as possible. However, extra addition up to 5-7% over and above 1% limit will not be harmful. But, more addition will negate the specific purpose of addition of C-MAX. C-Max should be used @1% of Cement.

How to use the cement mixture before initial setting?

When a cement mixture is carried from ground floor to 40th floor, time is a most important factor. If it can be carried before half an hour ahead of the initial setting time, then it will not have any effect. C-Max is not so quick setting as you think it to be. Please refer to the certificate of National Test House, which clearly shows about the initial setting times and final setting times. For C-MAX , the initial setting time is 105 minutes and final setting time is 175 minutes, as tested & found by National Test House, Kolkata, vide Test Certificate No. CE/05/216, dated 10/11/2005.

C-MAX is a new generation Polymer additive, which has a property of making the Cement Expandable. The doses recommended are between 0.6 % to 1.2 %. But, best results are obtained at 1 % addition rate i.e. 500 grams per bag of cement.
